When It Goes Off....

There was riot that wanted to hurt someone. They ran up and down streets yelling and making problems. They believe Sammy is the killer even though it wasn't fully proven in court. That's why he isn't with them because they will hunt him down. Robert got into a fight with  a police man because he was trying to mind his own business while the cop came in a disturbed him. The policeman was going to whip him and take him in. The two different sides were going against each other and someone told him to watch out for knives. Someone from each side needed to cross the street for it to be violent.

I think group think occurs majorly in these types of situations because they dont want to be left out and people try to convince others it's right.

12/6

All of a sudden I saw sociology when I went to my cousins college. She showed me where her friends were and you can see all the different groups sitting outside in the arcade area. I noticed the in-group they were all the football players and other jocks laughing and being dumb. My cousins group of friends seemed like a primary group because they were so close and all shared common interests.

When I was watching Criminal Minds, and Law and Order I was noticing the different kinds of deviance. One episode really stuck with me; there was a man who was kidnapping young women and they were trying to figure out who it was. During the episode the were questioning someone while he was smoking a pack of cigarettes and was underage but they didn't take him in because they were dealing with a murder case. I thought back to that worksheet that we did when we decided if it was or wasn't crime. He was breaking the law by underage smoking but it wasn't harming anyone else, so it was being deviant more than committing a crime.

Jail!

When we went to court I was paying attention to what was the reason why the criminals were in jail or on probation. All of the people who were in court were very deviant. Some more than others. One stood out to me the most and it was a women who looked to be about forty or so. She had an ex boyfriend who was disabled in a wheelchair, and she beat him with a club. The judge favored her on probation because she has a nine year old son and is a single mom. The poor man was in the back in his wheelchair crying and upset. I think the women reminded me of control theory because she felt she had control since he can't walk. The women didn't care about him she just wanted something from him and liked the power she had.
I also thought that the Sargent for jail was in control over the inmates because they acted deviant to end up in jail, but if they disobeyed him they knew they would be in trouble, no matter how "cool" they wanted to be.

little boys

I think that it's true about how people would judge their son about liking princesses. Boys don't have to like all boy toys except if he was that obsessed with pink and girlie items it would make me nervous as a parent. i think his dad is a major role model to him. His dad is a stay at home dad which means he does the laundry, cooks, and cleans, and his son thinks that's how he should act. I think its important that little kids follow the social roles, meaning they do boy things by play with trucks and girl things by playing with princesses. Those roles are judged by little kids and parents. Even the older brother made fun of his little brother in public.

10/18

All of a sudden I saw sociology when I was watching "Desperate Housewives." Gaby and Carlos found out Juanita wasn't really their daughter and that the hospital mixed up the kids. The parents agreed to be family friends to get to really know their daughters without telling them. Grace (Gaby's real daughter) was not part of a material culture. Her mother always told her to appreciate what she had but she wanted Gaby's Chanel purse so bad. She wanted to live a materialistic life style like Gaby.

Another time I noticed sociology was when I went to my cousins birthday party. I thought of cultural universals because for my culture every one was there. Cousins I haven't seen in five years were there. But going to my friends family birthday, it was only her immediate family. I didn't undertand why they don't have big family parties all the time like Italians do.

Folkways and Ethnocentrism

A folkway is doing something that wont hurt someone else, but you just don't usually do it. The other night my girlfriends and I went out to dinner. My one friend only had eleven dollars and her bill came out to twelve ninety-four, so she searched through her bag for loose change. We all gave her our change too, but when the waitress came to take our money she seemed a lot happier to see my debit card rather than all of Caitlin's change.

Something else reminded me of sociology last week, and it was ethnocentrism. It means to judge someones culture, in a mean way. For example people say Indians smell bad. On the show Jersey Shore the group of people that live in the house are Italian. It was on at my house when some one decided to say "ohh yea all Italians wana do is GTL (gym, tan, laundry) and party!" Which is not true because my family does other things normal families do.

Things that effect us today

This is the iPhone, and I think it is a symbol for America because we are all about the latest technology.

This picture represented things in the past because Uncle Sam was trying to get people to join the army, but it also can represent today’s army. More people want to join the army and be heroes for our country.

I think a lot of people in America want to be a part of the latest fashion, and be caught up on the celebrity gossip.

MTV is a channel that has reality shows and music videos. People want to believe they can be on those shows and want to hear the latest music.

Facebook. This is a huge social network that teenagers and some adults are always on. They can post pictures and what they're doing, so others can see about them.

Italy, and our society!

I was thinking about sociology when I remembered my vacation to Italy. In class we talked about the article we read the night before, and some things reminded me of Italy. One day when I was in Italy we had to go to the bank and it was totally different then here. First off the door to get in the bank is like a tube you stand in and it weighs you because then when you leave it could tell if you stole something. Also it's like a free for all; you fight to go to the front of the line. Where as here we wait in line or go through with our cars. Another thing is that from 1 to 4 everyone closes there shops and they go home for lunch and a nap. I don't think Americans would be able to do that since were constantly over packing our schedules.

Another time I saw sociology was during the news. They were talking about how more and more kids are addicted to technology. I think it's true because teenagers want all the new "cool" toys. We want to try to one up someone. Also we want to try and fit in with all of our friends and the media because those are the two major things that influence most teenagers.

Homework

Stefan thinks it's weird that women who look younger than 21 with be carded at a bar, and that we even have a drinking age that old. She also thought it was rude that she could only smoke outside of a building rather than where ever. She thinks of our rules are weird because her culture in Germany is more lenient. If teenagers lived in Germany that grew up here, they would be going crazy. We learn to follow all these rules even though we break them sometimes.

Girls.

Being at a party with my friends made me realize how we see other groups of girls. If you think about it most girls stare you down when your at the mall or anywhere. They want to feel like they're better cause they bought something from an expensive store and your just wearing sweats. Well at a party when girls from a different group or other schools come we dont get along with eachother. We want to be the ones who are the only girls the guys talk to or be invited to there parties. We think of us and our group of friends as the best, not even knowing anything about the other girls.

We think the same way about guys too. When were out shopping and theres an Abercrombie model walking around topless we all stop to talk to him, but if there was just an ordinary not so cute looking guy stopping to try and talk to us we wouldnt want to as much. We think just becasue the Abercrombie model has a 8-pack we should go buy something from the store. I think it's becasue we want to be at the top just like we talked about in class people buy named brand items to look better or have more of a value.

Me, Myself, and I

I'm a junior in high school, and in the last couple years I've learned a lot. My friends and I are really close; there's thirteen of us and were all like sisters. I no that they're there for me all the time. My family is from Italy and we try and visit there as often as we can. Our family occasions are loud and don't end until really late at night. I have one brother, Dino, and he's a freshman, and I also have a dog named Ozzy.
I am a varsity cheerleader at the high school. I've been cheering since i was in third grade. When I'm not cheering I'm either working or out with my friends. I work at Augustinos in West Chicago, and I love it. Everyone there is really nice there and I have flexible hours.
After high school I want to go to Illinois State University to become a surgical nurse. I love watching doctor shows and seeing all the stuff they do. Before I become a nurse I want to travel a lot because i love going on vacation with friends and family.
